The Big Knit (charity event)

For residents in Northern Ireland there is an annual charity event which involves knitting small hats for smoothies and some of the money paid for each smoothie with a hat goes to age concern.

Equipment needed

Lots of wool
Size 4 knitting needles
Wool needle
Scissors

Instructions

Cast on 28 stitches
Do 2 rows plain knit
12 rows, knit one row, pearl one row (stocking stitch) cast every second stitch (should be about 4 rows to cast of completely) then sew up

Supersize Crossword

Using a photocopier enlarge a crossword out of a magazine or newspaper, general knowledge is best. Completing the crossword can be done in a large group with a flip chart or pinned to a wall, or you could give each person a copy of the enlarged crossword.

Equipment needed

Newspaper or magazine
Pen
Photocopier and some paper

Instructions

Read out the questions to the room and fill in the crossword with the answers given.
Prizes can be given for correct answers.

Wear a Hat tell a Story

The idea of the game is that the wearer of the hat tells the story of where they would wearthis hat and what would they do. This often helps them to recall an old memory or fantasize about something they would like to do.

Equipment needed

A range of different kinds of hats, preferably a hat for each person taking part

Instructions

Let each person select a hat.
Then the organiser can start by having their turn first. My name is….. and I am going to a wedding in my hat…. Then you can ask Where? Who with? What will you be doing? How? Etc
Sometimes the prompts are not needed and the person will easily tell their story others will need a lot of help to tell a story.
Don’t dwell too long on a person who has difficulty telling a story help them to make one up take their picture and praise them then pass to the next person.

Remember I am Still Me Album

Residents and staff can produce an album, that has a photo of each resident and a blog about their life so far and what kind of person they are, what they like to do now etc. It’s about respect, of the individual and remembering they are still themselves. I did this album with residents and staff that I work with, it was fulfilling.

Make-over Monday

Equipment needed

Cleansing lotion, toner and moisturiser for sensitive skin
Cotton wool
Blusher brush
Selection of eye shadows, blushers, face powder and lipsticks

Instructions

Female residents love to be pampered.
Start by cleansing, toning and moisturising the face and neck.
Then get them to choose which make up they would like to have applied.
