A Day at the Races

Get your best dress and hat. Today is a day at the races

Why not host a day at the Races? You can host your own race day in communal rooms taking it as seriously as you like. Some people may wish to recreate a proper ‘ladies day’ with hats, Bucks Fizz and a full race card. Others may simply use it as a fun activity for people of all ages to join in.

Equipment needed

  • Wooden horses – or you could make cardboard horses in craft time
  • Hurdles – again these can be made in craft time
  • Large dice
  • Play money – you could use monopoly money
  • Pen
  • Paper

Instructions
  1. Number the horses from one to six.
  2. Place the horses at the start and then put out 6 to 8 hurdles afterwards.
  3. Roll the dice and move the horse with the corresponding number on the dice over the first hurdle.
  4. Allow the players to bet on the horses changing the odds based on the current position on the course.
  5. The winner is the first horse to jump over the final hurdle.
  6. If a horse’s number is rolled 3 times in a row this equals a fall and that horse is subsequently removed from the race.
  7. At the end the player with the most money wins.
